Binoculars are part of any astronomer equipment, shown here are a pair of Minoltas' 10x50 in top of a Universal Astronomics MicroStar.With a 6.5° field I use the binoculars to locate objects in the sky for further observing with the telescope.

For solar observing, sun filters are a most. I prefer the Baader filters, you can make them yourself and they are extremely sharp.
A set of color filters also help to increase contrast in planetary fixtures and deep sky objects.
